6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Eastern Cuba After Recent Hurricanes and Blackouts

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Cuba on Sunday, adding to the recent challenges faced by the island. The United States Geological Survey reported that the quake's epicentre was about 40 km south of Bartolomé Masó. Tremors were felt across eastern Cuba, including major cities like Santiago de Cuba. No immediate reports of damage or injuries have been made.

Cuba Shaken by 6.8 Magnitude Earthquake

Residents in Santiago de Cuba, the second largest city, experienced significant tremors. Yolanda Tabío, aged 76, described how people rushed to the streets and remained outside their homes in fear. She noted feeling at least two aftershocks but mentioned that her friends and family had not reported any damages. "You had to see how everything was moving, the walls, everything," she told The Associated Press.

Recent Natural Disasters

The earthquake follows a series of natural disasters that have hit Cuba recently. On Wednesday, Hurricane Rafael, a Category 3 storm, swept through western Cuba. The hurricane's strong winds caused widespread power outages, destroyed numerous homes, and led to the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of residents. Many areas are still without power days after the storm.

Earlier in October, Cuba faced severe challenges with island-wide blackouts lasting several days due to an energy crisis. This was followed by another powerful hurricane that impacted the eastern region of the island, resulting in at least six fatalities. These events have compounded the difficulties for many Cubans who are already struggling with daily life.

Social Impact and Protests

The ongoing blackouts and general dissatisfaction have sparked small protests across Cuba. Residents are expressing their frustration over the persistent hardships they face. The combination of natural disasters and energy issues has intensified public discontent on the island.

Despite these challenges, there is a sense of resilience among Cubans as they navigate through these difficult times. The recent earthquake adds another layer of complexity to an already challenging situation for many residents.
