EAM Jaishankar Visits Qatar- Here's What They Discussed

Jaishankar was greeted at the airport by Chief of Protocol, Ibrahim Fakhroo, as he arrived for the day-long official engagement. The Indian External Affairs Minister met with Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, in Doha. The discussions highlighted the depth of the relationship between India and Qatar and the potential for future collaboration.

A message of greetings and warm wishes from Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conveyed to His Highness The Amir and Prime Minister Al Thani by Jaishankar. "Delighted to meet the PM and FM of Qatar @MBA_AlThani_ in Doha this afternoon. Conveyed the greetings and warm wishes of PM @narendramodi to H.H. The Amir and him," Jaishankar stated in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

A wide range of topics was reviewed, with particular attention paid to political, trade, investment, energy, technology, culture, and people-to-people ties. Views were exchanged on both regional and global issues. Insights into the Gaza situation were shared by Al Thani, which was appreciated by Jaishankar.

A forward-looking approach to enhancing India-Qatar relations and maintaining a dialogue on mutual interests was expressed by Jaishankar. "Look forward to the further enhancement of India-Qatar relations and continued dialogue on issues of mutual interest," he added.

Jaishankar's visit occurred approximately four-and-a-half months after the release of eight former Indian Navy personnel by Qatar. These individuals had been sentenced to death following their arrest in August 2022. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi had earlier indicated that the visit would facilitate a review of various aspects of bilateral relations, including political, trade, investment, energy, security, cultural, and people-to-people relations, as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest, as reported by Hindustan Times.

The recent diplomatic engagements build upon a history of regular high-level visits. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Qatar from February 14 to 15, during which discussions were held with Qatar's Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. "India and Qatar share historic and friendly relations which are marked by regular exchange of high-level visits," stated the MEA.

Both Jaishankar and Prime Minister Al Thani are expected to have deliberated on the overall situation in West Asia, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, further solidifying their cooperation and understanding of critical regional issues. The enduring and historic relationship between India and Qatar continues to be reinforced through these high-level visits, reflecting the mutual interest and commitment to strengthen ties in various fields.
