EAM Jaishankar Condoles Loss Of Over 40 Lives In Kuwait Building Fire

A tragic fire broke out in a building housing workers in Mangaf city, southern Kuwait, early Wednesday. The blaze, which started around 6:00 am local time (0300 GMT), has claimed over 40 lives, according to Major General Eid Rashed Hamas.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed condolences on social media, saying, "Deeply shocked by the fire incident in Kuwait city. Over 40 deaths and more than 50 hospitalised. Our Ambassador has gone to the camp. We await further information. Deepest condolences to the families. Wish early recovery to those injured. Our Embassy will provide full assistance."

Reports indicate that the fire spread rapidly, trapping many inside the building. Dozens were rescued, but many succumbed to smoke inhalation.

Kuwait's Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah blamed real estate owners for violations and greed, contributing to the incident. "The greed of real estate owners leads to these matters," Sheikh Fahad was quoted by Reuters.

A senior police commander noted, "The building housed a large number of workers. We always alert and warn against cramming too many workers into housing accommodation."

Authorities have contained the fire and are investigating its cause. The incident highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations in worker accommodations.
