Dutch Tram Set Ablaze Amid Escalating Tensions Following Violence Against Israeli Soccer Fans
In Amsterdam, a tram was set ablaze by individuals wielding sticks and firecrackers, according to police reports. This incident occurred amidst rising tensions following violence targeting fans of an Israeli soccer club last week. The fire was quickly put out, and riot officers dispersed the crowd. Online images depicted property damage and firecrackers being set off. The cause of the unrest remains unclear, but authorities noted the tense atmosphere since last Thursday's events.

Following a Maccabi Tel Aviv-Ajax match, five people were hospitalised, and numerous arrests were made. Youths on scooters and on foot sought out Israeli fans, attacking them before fleeing from police. Amsterdam's mayor confirmed these details. Dutch police announced five new arrests related to the earlier violence. The suspects, aged 18 to 37, are from Amsterdam or nearby areas. Four remain in custody, while one has been released but is still under investigation.
Investigation and Arrests
Previously, four men arrested last week were ordered to remain in custody as investigations continue. Among them are two minors, aged 16 and 17, both from Amsterdam. The other two are adults from Amsterdam and a nearby city. Police have identified over 170 witnesses and collected forensic evidence from several locations. Prime Minister Dick Schoof stated that videos posted on social media are also being reviewed as part of the investigation.
Reports of antisemitic speech, vandalism, and violence have increased in Europe since the Gaza conflict began. Tensions in Amsterdam escalated before Thursday night's match. Local authorities banned pro-Palestinian demonstrators from gathering outside the stadium. Prior to the match, Maccabi fans removed a Palestinian flag from a building in Amsterdam and chanted anti-Arab slogans en route to the stadium.
Security Measures and Political Reactions
The mayor has prohibited all demonstrations in Amsterdam and declared several areas as risk zones where police can conduct checks on individuals. On Sunday, dozens were detained for participating in an outlawed pro-Palestinian demonstration in central Amsterdam. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar visited the Netherlands on Friday to offer Israel's assistance in the police investigation.
During his visit, Saar met with the Dutch prime minister and issued a statement condemning the attacks and demands for passport identification as reminiscent of "dark periods in history." The situation remains tense as authorities work to maintain order and investigate the incidents thoroughly.
