Outgoing Dutch PM Seeks Erdogan's Support for NATO Secretary General Bid
The Netherlands' outgoing Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, embarked on a significant diplomatic mission to Turkiye on Friday, engaging in discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The core agenda of Rutte's visit was to garner support for his bid to become the next secretary-general of NATO. This development comes as Jens Stoltenberg, the incumbent NATO chief and former Norwegian prime minister, approaches the conclusion of his tenure. Having served as NATO's top civilian official since 2014, Stoltenberg's term was extended multiple times, especially in the wake of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Rutte's candidacy has faced skepticism from NATO members Turkiye and Hungary. However, during his visit, Rutte emphasized the strategic importance of Turkiye within the alliance, labeling it a "very influential actor" in the region and a significant geopolitical power. Despite these discussions, Erdogan did not publicly commit to supporting Rutte or reveal Turkiye's stance on his candidacy.
Erdogan highlighted the qualities desirable in a NATO chief, underscoring the need for a candidate who would promote solidarity within the alliance and maintain order among its members. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of prioritizing NATO's role in ensuring Euro-Atlantic security. Although Erdogan refrained from making any explicit endorsements, his well-wishes towards Rutte at the conclusion of their news conference hinted at a positive rapport between the two leaders.
The process of nominating Stoltenberg's successor is under tight scrutiny, with NATO officials aiming to finalize the decision by the end of April. This timeline is strategically set before the commencement of competition for top European Union positions, which intensifies around the June 6-9 elections. Moreover, there is a concerted effort to resolve this matter promptly to prevent it from overshadowing NATO's 75th-anniversary summit scheduled in Washington in July.
The role of a NATO chief is pivotal, encompassing responsibilities such as chairing meetings and facilitating consultations among member countries. Additionally, they represent the collective voice of all member nations on the global stage. As discussions continue and decisions loom on the horizon, the alliance looks forward to welcoming a leader who can navigate through these challenging times while maintaining unity and strategic focus.
