Dutch Donald Trump Geert Wilders Wins Big in Netherlands Election
Geert Wilders, known as the Dutch Donald Trump, has won a massive victory in the Netherlands election and is in pole position to form the next ruling coalition and possibly become the Netherlands next prime minister.
Geert Wilders, often referred to as the Dutch Donald Trump, has emerged as the surprise victor in the recent Dutch elections. With a landslide victory, Wilders' Party for Freedom (PVV) is now in a prime position to form the next ruling coalition, potentially making him the next Prime Minister of the Netherlands. The exit polls revealed a stunning outcome, leaving even the seasoned politician himself taken aback. In his initial reaction, captured in a video posted on Twitter, Wilders expressed his astonishment by exclaiming "35!" - the number of seats his party was projected to win in the 150-seat lower house of parliament.
A Political Veteran with a Fiery Tongue

Wilders, known for his fiery rhetoric, has long been a prominent figure in Dutch politics, garnering both national and international attention. His populist policies and striking peroxide blond hair have drawn comparisons to former US President Donald Trump. However, unlike Trump, Wilders' political career seemed destined to remain in opposition. His closest brush with governance came in 2010 when he supported the first coalition formed by Prime Minister Mark Rutte. However, Wilders did not formally join the minority administration and ultimately brought it down after just 18 months due to disagreements over austerity measures. Since then, mainstream parties have shunned him.
Seeking Cooperation and Stability
In his victory speech, delivered at a small bar in a working-class suburb of The Hague, Wilders acknowledged the significance of his party's success and expressed a willingness to collaborate with other parties. With 35 seats, the PVV can no longer be ignored, and Wilders called for cooperation to address pressing issues such as housing shortages, the cost-of-living crisis, and access to quality healthcare. However, whether he can forge a stable coalition with former political adversaries remains uncertain.
A Target of Threats and Controversy
Wilders' fiery anti-Islam rhetoric has not only alienated mainstream politicians but also made him a target for extremists. For years, he has lived under constant protection due to numerous death threats. During Wednesday's voting at The Hague City Hall, Wilders was surrounded by burly security guards, scanning the area for potential threats. His life has been marked by moving from one safe house to another for nearly two decades. In 2009, the British government denied him entry to the country, citing concerns about his potential impact on community harmony and public security. Wilders had been invited by a member of Parliament's upper house to showcase his controversial film "Fitna," which criticizes the Quran as a fascist book. The film sparked violent protests across the Muslim world in 2008 due to its linking of Quranic verses with footage of terrorist attacks.
Shifting Focus and Softer Rhetoric
In an effort to appeal to mainstream voters this time around, Wilders toned down his anti-Islam rhetoric and focused less on the "de-Islamization" of the Netherlands. Instead, he prioritized hot-button issues such as housing shortages, the cost-of-living crisis, and access to good healthcare. However, his campaign platform still includes controversial proposals such as a referendum on the Netherlands leaving the European Union, an asylum stop, and a ban on Islamic schools, Qurans, and mosques. Despite these proposals, Wilders pledged on Wednesday night to uphold Dutch laws and the country's constitution, which enshrines freedom of religion and expression.
A Seasoned Lawmaker and Supporter of Israel
Later this year, Wilders is set to become the longest-serving lawmaker in the Dutch parliament. Since 1998, he has been a member of the House of Representatives, initially with the center-right People's Party for Freedom and Democracy. During his time with the party, he mentored a young Mark Rutte before eventually leaving to establish the Party for Freedom. On Wednesday night, Wilders revealed a softer side by expressing gratitude to his Hungarian-born wife, Krisztina, for her unwavering support. He is also a staunch supporter of Israel and advocates relocating the Dutch Embassy to Jerusalem while closing the diplomatic post in Ramallah, the seat of the Palestinian Authority.
Known for Witty One-Liners and a Love for Pets
In addition to his hardline politics, Wilders is known for his witty one-liners and his love for pets. His two cats, Snoetje and Pluisje, have their own Twitter account with nearly 23,000 followers. As the Dutch political landscape undergoes a significant shift, Geert Wilders stands at the forefront, ready to shape the future of the Netherlands.
