Drone Strike in Israel Injures Nearly 40 as Hezbollah Claims Responsibility Amid Ongoing Conflict
Nearly 40 individuals sustained injuries in a drone attack in Binyamina, Israel, on Sunday, with three critically hurt. The Hezbollah group from Lebanon claimed responsibility for this significant strike, marking one of the most severe incidents in a year-long conflict. Despite Israel's advanced air-defence systems, such attacks rarely result in numerous casualties. Israeli media noted two drones launched from Lebanon, with one intercepted by the military.

Hezbollah stated that the attack targeted an Israeli military training camp, retaliating against Israeli strikes in Beirut on Thursday that killed 22 people. This incident marked the second drone strike in Israel within two days. On Saturday, during Yom Kippur, a drone hit a Tel Aviv suburb, causing damage but no injuries. The United States announced plans to send a new air-defence system to Israel for enhanced missile protection.
Escalating Tensions with Iran and Hezbollah
Israel is currently engaged in conflicts with Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, both backed by Iran. An expected retaliation against Iran for a missile attack earlier this month remains unannounced. Iran has warned of a response to any Israeli aggression. Over the past year, Israel has consistently targeted what it claims are militant sites in Gaza.
A recent strike on Saturday night hit a home in the Nuseirat refugee camp, killing eight family members aged 8 to 23. Mohammad Abu Ghali, the brother of the deceased father, expressed grief over their deaths while they slept. The Israeli military insists it aims to avoid civilian casualties and attributes such losses to militant groups operating in densely populated areas.
UN Peacekeepers Caught in Crossfire
International criticism is mounting as Israeli forces have repeatedly targeted UN peacekeepers since launching ground operations in Lebanon. The military claims Hezbollah operates near these peacekeepers but has not provided evidence. UNIFIL reported that Israeli tanks breached one of its positions on Sunday, damaging the main gate and firing smoke rounds that caused skin irritation among peacekeepers.
The incident was labelled a "flagrant violation of international law" by UNIFIL. Recent Israeli strikes have injured five peacekeepers. The military explained that a tank inadvertently backed into a UN post while evacuating wounded soldiers under fire and used smoke for cover. Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani stated that Israel maintains contact with UNIFIL and investigates any harm to UN forces at "the highest level."
Netanyahu's Stance on UN Peacekeepers
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged UNIFIL to heed Israel's warnings to evacuate, accusing them of acting as "a human shield" for Hezbollah. "We regret the injury to the UNIFIL soldiers, and we are doing everything in our power to prevent this injury," he said in a video addressed to the UN secretary-general, who is banned from entering Israel.
Relations between Israel and the United Nations have deteriorated since the Gaza conflict began. Israel accuses the UN agency for Palestinian refugees of being infiltrated by Hamas, which the agency denies.
Humanitarian Crisis in Northern Gaza
In northern Gaza, Israeli forces continue their assault on Jabaliya, where militants are reportedly regrouping. The area has seen repeated attacks over the past year. Israel has ordered a complete evacuation of northern Gaza, including Gaza City. Despite this, around 400,000 people remain after initial evacuation orders.
The United Nations reports no food deliveries to northern Gaza since October 1st. Hospitals are included in evacuation orders without a set timetable as authorities work on patient transfers. Fares Abu Hamza from Gaza's Health Ministry described bodies left uncollected due to access issues.
Conflict's Toll on Civilians
The conflict began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel on October 7th, 2023, killing approximately 1,200 people and abducting around 250 individuals. About 100 hostages remain captive in Gaza; a third are presumed dead. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, over 42,000 Palestinians have died due to Israeli bombardments and ground invasions.
The ministry does not differentiate between militants and civilians but notes women and children account for over half of the deaths. Israel claims over 17,000 fighters have been killed without providing evidence.
Destruction in Lebanon Amid Conflict
Israeli airstrikes destroyed an Ottoman-era market in Nabatiyeh, Lebanon overnight, killing at least one person and injuring four others. Fires engulfed residential buildings and shops dating back to 1910 as reported by Lebanon's Civil Defence.
"Our livelihoods have all been leveled," said Ahmad Fakih about his destroyed shop. The Israeli military confirmed targeting Hezbollah locations without further details.
Nabatiyeh was among several communities warned by Israel to evacuate amid escalating tensions following Hezbollah's rocket attacks into Israel starting October 8th, 2023.
Ongoing Strikes and Casualties
The Lebanese Red Cross reported paramedics searching for casualties after an Israeli airstrike hit a house when another strike injured four paramedics and damaged ambulances despite coordination with UN peacekeepers informing the Israelis.
The Israeli military continued targeting Hezbollah on Sunday while reporting rocket fire from Lebanon throughout the day with at least 115 rockets fired into northern Israel resulting in severe injuries for two soldiers from anti-tank missiles.
Lebanon's Health Ministry reported at least 2,255 deaths since conflict onset including over 1,400 since September without specifying how many were Hezbollah fighters while noting at least 54 Israelis died from rocket attacks nearly half being soldiers.
