Gunman Scouted Trump Rally Site with Drone Before Attack, Says Official
The gunman involved in the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump is believed to have used a drone to survey the Pennsylvania rally site beforehand, according to a law enforcement official. The FBI, leading the investigation into last Saturday's shooting by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, has recovered the drone.

Drone Usage and Shooting Incident
Crooks fired several rounds from the roof of a building next to the Butler Farm Show grounds, where Trump was speaking. He was subsequently shot dead by a Secret Service counter sniper. The drone's use before the shooting might explain how Crooks knew where to position himself for the attack. The official who disclosed this information spoke anonymously as they were not authorised to discuss it publicly.
Details about the drone were initially reported by The Wall Street Journal. Trump mentioned this week that one bullet grazed his right ear. A memo from Texas Rep. Ronny Jackson, who served as Trump's White House physician, stated that Trump sustained a gunshot wound to his right ear from a high-powered rifle. The bullet came "less than a quarter of an inch from entering his head and struck the top of his right ear."
Casualties and Investigation
One of the bullets aimed at Trump killed 50-year-old firefighter Corey Comperatore, who was in the bleachers. Two other individuals were seriously injured during the incident. The FBI continues to investigate Crooks' motives but has not yet identified any ideological reasons behind his actions.
Investigators found photos of Trump, President Joe Biden, and other senior officials on Crooks' phone. He had also searched for dates related to the Democratic National Convention and Trump's appearances. Additionally, he looked up information about major depressive disorder.
Upcoming Details
More information about the investigation is expected to be released when FBI Director Chris Wray testifies before the House Judiciary Committee in the coming week.
The existence of the drone and its use before the shooting could provide crucial insights into Crooks' planning and execution of the attack. This aspect of the investigation remains a focal point for law enforcement officials.
The official who described these details emphasised that they were not authorised to speak publicly about the matter and requested anonymity. The FBI's ongoing investigation aims to uncover more about Crooks' background and possible motivations.
The tragic incident has raised questions about security measures at public events and how such threats can be mitigated in future gatherings involving high-profile individuals.
The investigation continues as authorities seek to understand all aspects of this attempted assassination and prevent similar incidents in the future.
