Dr. Anthony Fauci Recovers at Home After West Nile Virus Hospitalisation
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former leading US infectious disease expert, was recently hospitalised due to a West Nile virus infection. He is now recuperating at home, according to a spokesperson who requested anonymity for security reasons. The spokesperson assured that Fauci is expected to fully recover.

West Nile Virus and Its Impact
The West Nile virus is primarily transmitted through mosquito bites. While most individuals show no symptoms, about 20% may experience fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhoea, or rash, as per the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Severe illness occurs in approximately 1 out of 150 infected people and can sometimes be fatal.
Dr. Jonathan LaPook, CBS News chief medical correspondent, shared on social media that he spoke with Fauci on Saturday. Fauci mentioned he likely contracted the virus from a mosquito bite in his backyard. "Dr. Fauci was hospitalised about ten days ago after developing fever, chills, and severe fatigue," LaPook's post on X stated. It also noted that Fauci spent a week in the hospital.
Fauci's Role During the Pandemic
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Fauci served as the chief White House medical adviser and became a trusted voice for millions. However, his role also made him a target of partisan criticism. Although he left government service in 2022, he returned to testify before Congress in June regarding the origins of COVID-19 and the US response.
Last summer, Fauci joined Georgetown University as a distinguished university professor. His new role allows him to continue contributing to public health education and research.
Preventing West Nile Virus
There are currently no vaccines or specific treatments for West Nile virus. The CDC recorded 216 cases across 33 states as of August 20 this year. The best prevention method is to avoid mosquito bites.
Fauci's recent health scare underscores the importance of mosquito bite prevention and awareness about West Nile virus. His recovery is anticipated to be complete, allowing him to continue his work in public health.
