Dozen Gang Members Drown in Haiti During Ammunition Transport Amid Ongoing Violence

Approximately 50 suspected gang members have died this week following an assault on a coastal town in Haiti, according to a government official. The majority were killed by police, while at least a dozen drowned when their boat capsized. The incident occurred as they transported ammunition to gangs attacking Arcahaie, stated Wilner Réné from Haiti's Civil Protection Agency.

Gang Members Drown in Haiti Amid Violence

The attack began on Monday, with gunmen setting homes and cars ablaze in Arcahaie, located just northwest of Port-au-Prince. When the gangs exhausted their ammunition, they hid in nearby areas but were discovered by residents and police. Réné mentioned that the attack is ongoing and emphasized the urgent need for reinforcements from soldiers and special police units.

Gang Violence and Displacement

The gang coalition known as Viv Ansanm is blamed for the attack. This group has also targeted communities in Port-au-Prince recently. These attacks have displaced over 10,000 people in the capital within just one week, as reported by the UN's International Organization for Migration on Thursday.

More than half of those displaced have sought refuge in 14 makeshift shelters, including schools. The rest are temporarily staying with relatives. The surge in gang violence comes months after a UN-backed mission led by Kenyan police began to curb gang violence, which controls over 80% of Port-au-Prince.

International Concerns and Responses

The US government and top Haitian officials have expressed concerns about the Kenyan-led mission's lack of personnel and funding. They have requested its replacement with a UN peacekeeping mission. The violence has left more than 700,000 people homeless and resulted in thousands of deaths.

Earlier this year, the country's main airport was forced to close for nearly three months due to the violence. The situation remains critical as authorities continue to address the ongoing threat posed by gang activities across Haiti.

The escalating violence highlights the challenges faced by international efforts to restore stability in Haiti. As the situation develops, there is an urgent need for coordinated action to address both immediate security concerns and long-term solutions for peace and stability.
