The possibility of a further diplomatic outreach was the highlight of the meeting between India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi amidst the Doklam standoff.

Ajit Doval

Doval landed in China to take part in the BRICS summit on Thursday. He held talks on the sidelines of the summit with state councillor Yang Jiechi. The meeting was a fruitful one and both sides are hopeful that the tension would be de-escalated.

Highly placed sources say that the meeting was fruitful and opened the gates for a dialogue to de-escalate tensions between the two countries. The tone of the official Xinhua news agency too was conciliatory in nature. It said that there was a need to enhance mutual trust as the two nations are not born rivals.

An official in Delhi said that both sides understand that going to war is not the solution. The line India took is similar to the one by the Xinhua news agency which said that most economies, including those in the West will find themselves negatively impacted by an Indo-China war.

Former Research and Analysis Wing officer, Amar Bhushan tells OneIndia that the chances of any further escalation is very low. India and China, both want engagement and would like to see the back of the Doklam standoff soon. However Doval is unlikely to agree to that clause. India is likely to agree for a troop withdrawal only if its men are replaced by the Bhutanese forces, Bhushan says.

The matters between India and China are unlikely to escalate any further. Once the winter sets in the tensions would be resolved automatically says Bhushan. During this period the Chinese cannot remain in the area, the former R&AW officer also points out.
