"That Beautiful Face, Lips Like a Machine Gun": Donald Trump's Remark on Press Secretary Sparks Controversy

US President Donald Trump has stirred a fresh political storm after he diverted from an economic speech in Pennsylvania to praise the looks and mannerisms of his White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

The comments, delivered before an enthusiastic crowd, quickly overshadowed his attempt to promote his administration's economic messaging.

Physical Compliments Trigger Backlash

While introducing members of his team, Trump highlighted Leavitt as a standout figure.

"We even brought our superstar today, Karoline. Isn't she great? Is Karoline great?" he asked, prompting loud applause.

The 79 year old leader soon shifted from her professional qualities to her appearance and delivery style.

"You know, when she goes on television, Fox, like, I mean, they dominate, they dominate ... When she gets up there with that beautiful face and those lips that don't stop-op-op-op, like a little machine gun," Trump said, punctuating his remarks with sound effects that left many observers puzzled.

Critics from both major parties noted that moments like these detract from the dignity of the office and undermine the professional autonomy of senior White House staff.

Trump Says Leavitt Has an Easier Job Due to Policy Positions

Continuing his praise, Trump suggested that Leavitt's confidence stems from positions his administration holds on several social and immigration issues.

"She's got no fear... because we have the right policy. We don't have men in women's sports ... we don't have to sell transgender to everybody, and we don't have to sell open borders where the whole world is allowed to come into our country from prisons and everywhere else, so she's got a little bit easier job. I wouldn't want to be the other side's press secretary," he added.

This portion of his speech reignited debate around the administration's stance on gender identity, athletics, and immigration enforcement.

Pattern of Similar Remarks Surfaces

The Pennsylvania comments were not the first time Trump used similar language to describe Leavitt.

During an August interview with Newsmax, he had said, "It's that face. It's that brain. It's those lips, the way they move. They move like she's a machine gun."

He also stated, "I don't think anybody has ever had a better press secretary than Karoline."

Leavitt has had a long association with Trump, having served as an assistant press secretary from 2019 to 2021.

After an unsuccessful congressional run, she rejoined the administration in January and became the youngest White House press secretary in American history.

She is the fifth person to hold the position for Trump and the first in his second term.

The New Hampshire native is married to real estate developer Nicholas Riccio, 60, and they have a son, Niko.
