Donald Trump Suspends Tariffs on Mexico for One Month After Talks with Claudia Sheinbaum

U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to temporarily "pause" tariffs on Mexican goods for one month after holding talks with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

In a social media post, Trump announced that negotiations would continue to reach a "deal" between the two nations. Sheinbaum confirmed the development, stating that both countries would focus on enhancing cooperation in two key areas: security and commerce.

"Our teams will start working today on security and commerce," Sheinbaum posted on X. As part of the agreement, Mexico will deploy 10,000 National Guard members along the U.S.-Mexico border to combat drug trafficking.

This tariff pause follows Trump's February 1 announcement imposing tariffs on major U.S. trading partners, including Canada, Mexico, and China. Trump enforced a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports, and a 10% tariff on Chinese goods, calling it "bold action" to hold these nations accountable for curbing illegal immigration and halting the flow of fentanyl and other drugs into the U.S.

In retaliation, Canada imposed 25% tariffs on U.S. goods, while Mexico and China also vowed countermeasures.

Earlier on Monday, Trump spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about the tariffs, stating they would talk again later in the day. "Just spoke to Justin Trudeau. Will be speaking to him again at 3:00 P.M.," Trump wrote, emphasizing that the tariffs were part of a "drug war" targeting the flow of fentanyl into the U.S.

The White House indicated that Mexico appears "serious" about addressing Trump's executive order on tariffs, while Canada has "misunderstood" it as a trade war between the neighboring countries.
