Donald Trump's Return On COP29 Climate Talks In Baku: What To Expect
As COP29 kicks off in Baku, Azerbaijan, the world's climate negotiators are bracing for the potential impacts of Donald Trump's re-election.
With global temperatures hitting new highs, devastating natural disasters becoming more frequent, and a looming climate crisis, Trump's return to the White House could complicate efforts to curb global warming.

Trump's Climate Stance: A Roadblock for Global Action
Known for his dismissal of climate change as a "hoax," Trump's re-election raises alarms among climate experts. In the past, he referred to global warming as a "con job" and pulled the United States out of the Paris Agreement, a historic climate deal aimed at limiting global warming. His policies, which favor increased fossil fuel production, could undermine international efforts to limit carbon emissions.
With the world already on track for a record-breaking year in terms of heat, extreme weather events, and rising carbon emissions, the stakes at COP29 have never been higher. However, Trump's "drill, baby drill" philosophy stands in stark contrast to the scientific consensus that climate change is a real and pressing threat.
The US's Role in Global Climate Finance at Risk
A key aspect of COP29 discussions is funding for developing nations to tackle climate change. These countries are seeking a substantial increase in financial support by $1 trillion annually by 2035. Yet, experts fear that Trump's administration will reduce US contributions to climate finance, further widening the gap between wealthy and developing nations.
"There is no hope of reaching a safe climate without substantive action from the United States, China, and Europe," warned Stanford climate scientist Rob Jackson. With Trump's policies, China may be less motivated to increase its own emissions reductions, exacerbating global efforts.
The Paris Agreement: A Fragile Future?
Under Trump's previous term, the US withdrew from the Paris Agreement, creating a leadership vacuum in climate negotiations. While the global community rallied, experts worry that his re-election could result in a more entrenched US withdrawal from climate commitments, potentially derailing progress towards keeping global temperatures below 1.5°C.
"We cannot afford to let the momentum for global action on climate change be derailed," said Ralph Regenvanu, Vanuatu's special envoy for climate change. Yet, despite the challenges, there's hope that the Paris Agreement's resilience will keep climate action on track.
Global Unity: A Silver Lining?
While Trump's re-election may seem like a setback for international climate cooperation, there's a silver lining. Many countries, including the EU and China, are expected to step up their commitments. The 2017 Paris Agreement exit didn't lead to a global collapse-many states, cities, and businesses in the US continued to pursue climate action.
"The rest of the world is used to the US flip-flopping now," said climate expert Alden Meyer. "We are not going to give up. That would be the worst possible option."
As COP29 continues, negotiators are determined to push forward with climate action, even as the challenges of a Trump presidency loom large. With countries like the UK, EU, and China showing commitment, the global fight against climate change may yet endure.
The Road Ahead: Turning Tides Against Trump's Climate Denial
As the climate crisis intensifies, the outcome of COP29 could shape the future of global climate diplomacy. While Trump's policies may create obstacles, the world's resolve to tackle climate change remains strong. Whether the US reverts to its climate-denial stance or not, the planet's survival hinges on continued collective action that, experts say, is non-negotiable.
With climate change already wreaking havoc worldwide, COP29 is a critical moment for the world to unite. As Mary Robinson, former Irish president, emphasized, "The outcome of the US elections should not be used as an excuse by world leaders to avoid taking action against climate change. It will only bring more death and devastation."
