Prosecution Concludes Its Case in Donald Trump's Hush Money Trial

The hush money trial involving former U.S. President Donald Trump has progressed into its concluding phase, with Michael Cohen, the prosecution's key witness, making his return to the stand on Monday. Cohen's testimony last week was pivotal, as he implicated Trump in the alleged scheme aimed at suppressing negative stories to protect his presidential campaign. He detailed to jurors how Trump had assured him of reimbursement for payments made and kept him informed about efforts to silence women who claimed to have had sexual encounters with Trump. These allegations have been consistently denied by Trump.

During the continuation of his cross-examination, defense attorneys probed into Cohen's business transactions and other activities leading up to the payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. They also scrutinized Cohen's income sources since Trump assumed office, including earnings from his criticism of the former president. The prosecution indicated their intention to rest their case following the conclusion of Cohen's testimony, although the possibility of calling rebuttal witnesses remains. The defense team disclosed plans to summon at least one witness, leaving open the question of whether Trump himself will take the stand.

Judge Merchan mentioned that closing arguments are expected to occur the Tuesday following Memorial Day, marking the trial's 19th day. Trump faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, pleading not guilty to all charges. This trial is historic as it represents the first criminal trial of a former U.S. president and is one of four prosecutions against Trump that have reached a jury.
