Less than a week after his historic talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said his American counterpart Donald Trump deserved the Nobel Peace Prize for trying to resolve the North Korean crisis over its nuclear programme, official sources in Seoul said on Monday, April 30, reports said.
As per an official of the Blue House, South Korea's presidential address, who spoke to the media, Moon said in a meeting of senior secretaries that Trump "should win" the Nobel Prize and what they needed was only peace, the reports added.
It also added that Moon expressed his idea of Trump deserving the prestigious prize after Lee Hee-ho, the widow of late South Korean president Kim Dae-Jung congratulated him and said Moon deserved the prize, the Blue House official said, according to the reports.
At the historic declaration made at truce village Punmunjeom on April 27, the two leaders vowed to end the Korean War which is technically still on and strive towards "complete denuclearisation" of the Korean Peninsula.
North Korea emerged a serious threat to the peace in the region as well to the international community with its reckless nuclear ambitions but in 2018, Kim has shown a considerable intent to make diplomatic openings with South Korea and big powers like the US and China. A week before the summit with Moon, Kim also declared that his regime was giving up nuclear tests and shut down its nuclear site.
While many said crippling sanctions by the West compelled him to make peace for a continued defiance would see his isolationist regime collapse in no time, others were of the opinion that Kim was forced to retreat because his nuclear test site had collapsed because of an explosion.
In March, Trump accepted an offer from Kim via a South Korean envoy to have direct talks on the spot and now the world is eagerly waiting for the meeting - the first ever between an American president and North Korean leader - to take shape. The duo might meet in May end.
Trump and Kim have traded harsh verbal attacks in the recent past before deciding to sit together.
The South Korean president had also said in January that Trump deserved a "big credit" for making the Korean talks possible.
Four US presidents have won the Nobel Peace Prize till date and they include Trump's predecessor Barack Obama, who bagged it in 2009 - soon after coming to power through many, including Obama himself, were surprised by the decision.
Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Jimmy Carter are the three other American presidents to have won the Nobel Peace Prize.
