Advanced DNA Testing Identifies Darylnn Washington as Victim of Detroit Serial Killer Linked to Seven Deaths

The remains of a woman discovered in an abandoned house in Detroit have been identified nearly two decades later. Authorities announced that the woman, previously known as Jane Doe since 2006, was identified as Darylnn Washington through advanced DNA testing. This breakthrough was made possible with the help of Othram Inc., a Texas-based company specialising in forensic evidence analysis.

Darylnn Washington Identified as Serial Killer Victim

In 2022, Detroit police enlisted Othram Inc. to assist in solving this long-standing mystery. The company utilised forensic evidence to construct a DNA profile, conduct genealogical research, and provide new investigative leads. Othram frequently collaborates with law enforcement agencies across the United States to solve such cases.

DNA Technology and Investigations

"Technology is amazing," stated Jackson Vidaurri, a spokesperson for the Detroit police. Washington's family has been informed of her identification. However, no further details about the technological methods used were disclosed at this time.

In 2006, Shelly Brooks faced charges for the murder of seven women, whom he had reportedly paid for sex. Some of these victims had been discovered years before his arrest. Brooks was tried for two murders, found guilty, and sentenced to life imprisonment. Following his life sentence, other cases were not pursued further in court.

Serial Killer's Conviction

Maria Miller from the Wayne County prosecutor's office explained that Brooks' lifetime imprisonment meant additional cases were not pursued. "All their bodies were found in remote locations in Detroit: an abandoned apartment building, a vacant garage, an alley, a vacant field, and a vacant house," noted the Michigan Court of Appeals in a 2008 summary.

During Brooks' trial, DNA evidence and his incriminating statements to police played a crucial role in his conviction. Despite testifying in his own defence and denying any involvement in the murders, jurors did not find him credible.

This case highlights the significant role of advanced DNA technology in solving cold cases and bringing closure to families affected by such tragedies. The identification of Darylnn Washington after so many years underscores the potential of modern forensic science in aiding law enforcement efforts.
