Disney Employees Sue Over Misleading Relocation to Florida Promise
In a significant legal action, Disney employees have initiated a lawsuit against their employer, alleging deceit in their relocation from California to Florida. The move was initially prompted by Disney's announcement of a new office campus in Orlando, aimed at consolidating various departments for enhanced collaboration. This decision, disclosed by the Disney Parks chief in July 2021, affected up to 2,000 workers across digital technology, finance, and product development sectors.

The lawsuit reveals that employees faced a tough choice: relocate to Florida for a purportedly improved lifestyle and work environment or face termination. This decision was made more complex by personal ties to Southern California and concerns about uprooting families. Despite these challenges, Disney assured employees of the benefits of moving to a state-of-the-art campus near the Walt Disney World theme park resort.
However, as resistance to the move grew among employees by late 2021, Disney advised them to pause their relocation plans. During this period, some employees, including lead plaintiffs Maria De La Cruz and George Fong, had already sold their homes in California in anticipation of the move. Fong, a creative director of product design, even sold his childhood home he had inherited.
By June 2022, amidst an escalating dispute between Disney and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over a controversial Florida law, Disney announced delays in the campus opening, suggesting employees could postpone moving until 2026 but still encouraged relocation by 2024. This feud with DeSantis led to significant changes in the governance of Walt Disney World's district, with DeSantis appointing new board members early in 2023.
The situation took a dramatic turn in May 2023 when Disney scrapped the $1 billion Orlando campus project. Employees who had moved were told they could return to California, amidst growing concerns over job security and the lack of adequate facilities in Florida. This decision came as housing prices near the planned campus fell while those in California surged alongside rising mortgage interest rates.
De La Cruz and Fong, having either moved back or planning to return to California, are seeking economic and punitive damages through the lawsuit. They represent a group of employees who have faced financial and personal hardships due to the aborted relocation plan.
Despite reaching out for comment, Disney has not responded to inquiries regarding the lawsuit. This legal battle unfolds as Disney and the DeSantis-appointed board members of Disney World's governing district recently concluded their dispute with a 15-year development agreement promising significant investment into Disney World.
