Did You Know? Providence Faces Brown University Tragedy, City Once Celebrated for ‘Nicest Judge’ Frank Caprio
Providence in Rhode Island is a city many across the world associate with compassion and calm authority, thanks largely to Judge Frank Caprio, whose courtroom videos earned him global recognition as "the nicest judge in the world".

For years, his humane rulings and empathy-driven justice put Providence on the global map for the right reasons. This week, however, the same city finds itself at the centre of a very different global conversation following a deadly shooting at Brown University.
From Judge Frank Caprio's Courtroom to Campus Crisis
Judge Frank Caprio's rise to international fame transformed Providence into a symbol of kindness within the justice system. Clips from his municipal courtroom showed a judge willing to listen, forgive and prioritise dignity over punishment, earning admiration far beyond the United States.
That image now stands in sharp contrast to the fear and uncertainty gripping the city after two students were killed and nine others injured in a shooting at Brown University, one of the country's oldest and most prestigious Ivy League institutions.
Hunt for the Brown University Gunman Continues
Authorities on Monday, December 15, 2025, knocked on doors and searched yards across Providence, hoping to find video footage or any clue that could lead them to the attacker. Investigators released three new videos of the suspect, believed to have carried out the shooting on Saturday, December 13. In the footage, the man is seen wearing a mask and a dark two-tone jacket, with his face not visible.
Although the suspect's identity remains unknown, officials said footage recorded around two hours before the shooting offered the clearest images so far. The FBI described the man as about 5 feet 8 inches tall with a stocky build and announced a reward of $50,000 for information leading to his identification, arrest and conviction.
"We're asking for the public's assistance," Providence police chief Col Oscar Perez said at a news conference, urging anyone who might recognise the suspect to contact the tip line.
Setbacks, Security Questions and Lingering Fear
Police initially detained and then released a person of interest on Sunday, December 14, after determining that evidence pointed elsewhere. The lockdown at Brown University was lifted later that day, but hopes of a swift breakthrough faded when authorities acknowledged the suspect was still at large.
The turn of events has raised serious questions about campus security, the lack of usable surveillance footage and whether early focus on a person of interest may have given the attacker time to escape.
Colin Moussette, who has friends studying at Brown and is considering enrolling next year, said the situation left him unsettled.
"How someone got away, like in the middle of the day is, to me, not only heartbreaking but very concerning," he said. "How they got access to the building is concerning."
A City Known for Kindness Faces a Harsh Reality
While Brown University was no longer under lockdown and city schools reopened on Monday, several colleges in Rhode Island and other Ivy League campuses stepped up security. Yale University confirmed additional measures would be in place for Hanukkah celebrations.
The shooting came during final exams at Brown and triggered hours of chaos on campus and in surrounding neighbourhoods, with hundreds of officers deployed in search of the gunman. Investigators have yet to determine how the attacker gained entry to the first-floor classroom where the shooting occurred.
Li Ding, a Rhode Island School of Design student who is part of a dance team at Brown, expressed frustration over security lapses.
"The fact that we're in such a surveillance state but that wasn't used correctly at all is just so deeply frustrating," she said.
Once celebrated globally through Judge Frank Caprio's compassion, Providence now faces the sobering task of restoring a sense of safety and trust as it confronts one of the darkest chapters in its recent history.
