Did Turkey Block Instagram? What Do We Know

The action was triggered by comments from Fahrettin Altun, the Turkish presidency's communications director, who criticized the Meta-owned platform for allegedly blocking condolence posts regarding the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Altun accused Instagram of "censorship" and stated that the platform had not cited any policy violations for its decision.

The Turkish presidency and government officials have not provided further details about the block. However, it has been noted that the decision may have been influenced by political sensitivities surrounding Haniyeh's death, which was blamed on Israel by Hamas and Iran, as reported by Al Jazeera. The Israeli government has not commented on the incident.

In Turkey, where there are more than 50 million Instagram users, many have reported difficulties accessing their feeds. Yaman Akdeniz, a Turkish digital law expert, criticized the move as arbitrary and lacking justification, questioning the legal basis for such a ban, as per media reports.

The censorship has sparked reactions on other social media platforms, with users expressing frustration and mockery over the situation. No immediate comment has been received from Meta Platforms Inc. regarding the ban or Altun's accusations. As of now, the ban's impact on Instagram's user base and potential legal challenges remain unclear.
