A Syrian Air flight, reportedly an Ilyushin Il-76T, departed Damascus airport during the rebel offensive. Initially heading toward Syria's coastal region, the plane suddenly reversed its course and disappeared from radar near Homs.

Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 reveals the aircraft's abrupt drop in altitude from 3,650 meters to 1,070 meters moments before vanishing.

While unconfirmed, the disappearance has sparked speculation of either a mechanical failure or the plane being shot down, especially as it crossed rebel-held territory. Flightradar acknowledged possible discrepancies in the data, citing outdated transponders and GPS interference in the region.

Speculation Over Assad's Presence

The passengers aboard the missing plane remain unidentified. However, Syrian sources told Reuters there's a "high probability" Assad was onboard and possibly killed. Egyptian journalist Khaled Mahmoud further fueled speculation by tweeting about the crash, suggesting it may have been deliberate.

Some reports indicate the aircraft might have been heading to Russia's Latakia airbase, a stronghold controlled by Russian forces, often seen as a refuge for Assad and his regime.
