Dick Cheney Dead at 84: Iraq War, Torture Policies and Controversial Legacy Revisited
Dick Cheney is dead at 84. For many around the world, he will not be remembered as a statesman or patriot - but as the architect of some of the darkest chapters in modern American history. He institutionalised secrecy, torture, lies, and endless wars
The Father of the Forever War
When the Twin Towers fell in 2001, Cheney saw not tragedy alone, but opportunity - a chance to expand executive power to levels unseen since Nixon. He masterminded a doctrine of preemptive war, insisting that the U.S. had to strike first and ask questions later. Iraq became his laboratory.

The invasion of Iraq in 2003 - launched on false claims of Saddam Hussain has nuclear weapons - killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, destabilized an entire region, and gave birth to ISIS
He promised Americans that U.S. troops would be "greeted as liberators" and the war would last "weeks rather than months." Instead, it lasted nearly a decade, drained trillions of dollars.
The Master of Secrecy and Surveillance
Cheney's post-9/11 America became a fortress of fear. He pushed for warrantless wiretapping of citizens, mass surveillance programs, and the erosion of civil liberties - all under the pretext of security. His office operated like a shadow government, bypassing parliament, the courts, and sometimes even the president.
The Torturer-in-Chief:
Cheney was the loudest defender of what he called "enhanced interrogation techniques" - waterboarding, sleep deprivation, mock executions, and other brutal acts against detainees. The CIA's own report later revealed that prisoners were tortured to the brink of death, often for no actionable intelligence.

Cheney called it "justice." The rest of the world called it torture.
Profiting From War:
When Cheney left his CEO post at Halliburton to join Bush adminstration n 2000, he received a $35 million payout. Once the Iraq War began, Halliburton and its subsidiaries were awarded billions in no-bid contracts to rebuild the very country (Iraq) Cheney had helped destroy.
It was war as business - and business was booming. Soldiers died, Iraqis suffered, and Cheney and his former company earned billions of dollars.
Destroyer of Republican Conscience
Cheney's daughter Liz would later emerge as a critic of Donald Trump, and in his final years Cheney too warned that Trump was a "threat to the republic." But that warning rang hollow from the man who had hollowed out the Constitution himself.
It was Cheney who taught future presidents that laws could be bent, Congress sidelined, and the public misled in the name of "national security."
A Legacy Written in Blood and Silence:
For millions in Iraq, Afghanistan, and beyond, Dick Cheney's name evokes not patriotism but pain. His policies left a trail of destruction that reshaped the Middle East, radicalized generations, and scarred America's global image.
The flags flying at half-staff in Washington for Cheney now stand as silent witnesses to the countless unmarked graves left behind by his so-called "war on terror."
History will not absolve him. Cheney may have believed that power justified anything - lies, torture, war, corruption - but the record he leaves behind is one of moral bankruptcy.
