Tragic Train Fire in Dhaka Leaves Four Dead, Many Injured

Devastating Fire Engulfs Train

The incident unfolded around 9 pm when four carriages of the Benapole Express, a train originating from Benapole, a town bordering the Indian state of West Bengal, were deliberately set ablaze as it approached its destination at Kamalapur Railway Station in Dhaka. The fire rapidly spread, engulfing the train and trapping passengers inside.

Search and Rescue Efforts

Firefighters and rescue teams rushed to the scene to extinguish the flames and assist the victims. Shahjahan Shikdar, the spokesperson for the Fire Service and Civil Defence, confirmed the recovery of four bodies, with search operations still ongoing to locate any remaining victims.

Railway Officials Provide Details

According to railway officials, the Benapole Express was carrying approximately 292 passengers, many of whom were returning home from India. The train was targeted and set on fire at 9 pm as it reached the Gopibagh area near the railway station.

Witness Accounts

Local witnesses described the harrowing scene as a middle-aged man trapped inside the burning train pleaded for his wife and children to be saved before him. Despite efforts to rescue him, the man succumbed to the flames.

Foreign Nationals Among Passengers

Reports from Somoy TV indicated that some Indian nationals were also among the passengers on the train, highlighting the cross-border implications of the incident.

Electoral Context and International Observers

The tragic event occurred on the eve of Bangladesh's general elections, scheduled for Sunday, January 7. Over 100 foreign observers, including three from India, have arrived in Dhaka to monitor the electoral process. The BNP, led by former prime minister Khalida Zia, is boycotting the elections, demanding an interim non-party neutral government to oversee the polls. This demand has been rejected by the ruling Awami League, headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Recent Train-Related Incidents

Bangladesh has witnessed a series of train-related incidents in recent months, raising concerns about sabotage and security. On December 19, 2022, unidentified saboteurs set a train on fire, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including a mother and child. Another incident occurred in early December when saboteurs uprooted railway tracks, causing seven carriages to derail in Gazipur, resulting in one passenger's death and dozens of injuries. On January 2, a train narrowly avoided a major crash after suspected saboteurs removed dog spikes from a railway bridge in northern Bangladesh.

Accusations and Denials

The ruling Awami League has accused the BNP of carrying out these acts of sabotage, allegations that the BNP has vehemently denied. The incidents have heightened tensions and raised concerns about the safety and security of the upcoming elections.

The deadly arson attack on the passenger train in Bangladesh has cast a shadow over the country's upcoming general elections. The loss of innocent lives and the injuries sustained by many have added to the prevailing sense of uncertainty and apprehension. As Bangladesh prepares for its electoral process, ensuring the safety and security of its citizens remains paramount. Thorough investigations into these incidents are crucial to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent further tragedies.
