Music Festival at Dhaka Square Rallies Support for Bangladesh Flood Victims

On Friday night, several local bands and musicians united at a prominent memorial site near Dhaka University to perform for flood victims in Bangladesh. The event took place at Raju Memorial, a location that has become symbolic of recent anti-government protests.

The sculpture at the memorial was illuminated with vibrant colours, and two large hoardings with Bengali slogans flanked it, creating an artistic backdrop. Hundreds of people, mostly young students from Dhaka University, gathered to watch the performances. Many waved the national flag of Bangladesh and captured moments on their mobile phones.

Concert for a Cause

The emcee announced that the concert aimed to support flood-affected people, urging attendees to donate money, medicine, clothes, and other essentials. A musician on stage appealed, "This concert we are taking part in today is for our brothers and sisters out there who are affected by the floods. Please donate with an open heart."

Monsoon rains have caused severe flooding in Bangladesh and upstream Indian regions, killing at least 13 people and displacing nearly three million. The affected districts include Comilla, Noakhali, and Feni. The newly installed interim government faces significant challenges amid this political transition.

Symbolic Location

The Raju Memorial is situated in a traffic roundabout and features a mounted sculpture that has become an emblem of anti-government protests. These protests led to the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5. The site has been a focal point for demonstrations demanding no political interference in university affairs and timely student union elections.

A band performed Bangla rap songs with lyrics reflecting the anti-government protests that led to the previous government's downfall. Some spectators sat on the road in front of the memorial, while others stood around a makeshift wooden barricade. Many wore headbands themed on the Bangladesh national flag, symbolising resistance against the former government.

Floods and Climate Challenges

Bangladesh is crisscrossed by over 200 rivers, including 54 transboundary rivers with India. A depression in the Bay of Bengal has caused heavy rainfall, leading to rivers in the north-eastern Meghna Basin and south-western Chattrogram Hills Basin flowing above danger levels. Weather experts attribute the widespread flooding to torrential rains, overflowing rivers, El Nino, and climate change.

The public square facing the TSC Teacher Student Centre of Dhaka University houses the Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture, inaugurated in 1997. This area has become a gathering spot for students advocating for their principal demands: no political interference in university matters and prompt student union elections.

The concert featured songs with powerful lyrics celebrating the anti-government protests and struggles. Some of these songs have already become anthems of resistance, with the crowd singing along enthusiastically.

The event highlighted both cultural unity and social activism as musicians used their platform to raise awareness and support for flood victims while commemorating significant political movements.
