Dhaka Explosion Kills One as Political Crisis Worsens in Bangladesh

A man was killed in a late-evening explosion in the Bangladeshi capital on Wednesday after a crude explosive was hurled from a flyover, heightening concerns amid the country's ongoing political tension.

The incident took place in a busy part of Dhaka, triggering panic among locals and prompting an immediate security response. Police have launched an investigation, though the motive behind the attack remains unclear.

Explosion Reported Near Moghbazar Memorial

According to police and eyewitnesses, the explosive was thrown from a flyover and landed beneath it, directly in front of the Mogbazar Freedom Fighters' Memorial, an area that usually sees heavy public movement. The device detonated on impact, critically injuring a man who was standing below.

Witnesses said the attackers fled immediately after throwing the explosive, leaving the area in chaos as people ran for cover.

Victim Identified by Family Members

The injured man was rushed for medical help but died shortly after the blast. He was later identified by relatives as Siam, who worked at a private factory. Family members said he happened to be in the area at the time of the explosion and was not the intended target, though this has not been officially confirmed.

His identity was initially unknown and was established only after relatives arrived at the scene.

Police Probe Underway, Motive Unclear

Police quickly cordoned off the area following the blast as fear spread among residents. Senior officers visited the spot to assess the situation and collect evidence.

Masud Alam, Deputy Commissioner of the Ramna Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said initial findings point to the explosive being thrown downward from the flyover. "The motive has not yet been confirmed," he said, adding that an investigation is under way.

No Claim of Responsibility So Far

Authorities said no group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Security has been tightened in and around the area as investigators continue to examine whether the incident is linked to the wider political unrest gripping the country.
