A catastrophic fire that engulfed a seven-story building in the heart of Dhaka, Bangladesh, has resulted in the tragic loss of 43 lives, with 22 others sustaining critical injuries. The Health Minister of Bangladesh, Dr. Samanta Lal Sen, confirmed the grim news during a press briefing held at 2 am on Friday.
Fire's Rapid Spread

The fire broke out with alarming speed at approximately 9:50 pm on Thursday, originating from a restaurant situated on the building's first floor. It swiftly spread to the upper floors, which housed additional restaurants and a garment shop. Fire service officials reported that a total of 75 individuals were rescued from the building, including 42 who were found unconscious.
Mobilization of Emergency Services
In response to the escalating emergency, thirteen fire service units were promptly mobilized to combat the raging inferno. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, with thirty-three individuals being admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and ten to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
Critical Condition of Survivors
Dr. Sen, a renowned burn wound specialist, expressed grave concerns regarding the condition of the survivors. He revealed that twenty-two individuals were undergoing treatment at the two healthcare facilities, and their condition remained critical. The respiratory systems of those who managed to survive the fire had sustained severe damage, posing significant challenges to their recovery.
Unrecognizable Bodies and Rising Death Toll
The intensity of the fire left some of the victims' bodies beyond recognition, making identification a daunting task. Consequently, authorities feared that the death toll could rise as the search and rescue operations continued.
Desperate Escape Attempts
Witnesses and officials recounted the harrowing moments as individuals sought refuge from the inferno by rushing to the upper floors. Firefighters valiantly employed ladders to rescue numerous individuals trapped in the building.
The devastating fire in Dhaka serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of fire safety measures. As investigations unfold, the nation mourns the loss of its citizens and stands united in supporting the families of the victims during this time of immense grief.
