DGFT Sets Up Helpdesk To Navigate Global Trade And Tariff Challenges

To assist Indian stakeholders in navigating the difficulties of shifting global tariff regimes, import surges, and export-related issues, the Center has operationalized a new Global Tariff and Trade Helpdesk in light of the growing complexity of international trade. The Commerce Ministry released a formal statement on Friday announcing the initiative, which was started by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

According to the ministry, it is keeping a careful eye on developments in international trade, particularly those resulting from sudden changes in tariffs and the emergence of new trade barriers. "There may be both new export opportunities and heightened import pressures from specific countries or product sectors given the evolving trade landscape and the introduction of various tariff and counter-tariff measures," the statement said.

The goal of the helpdesk is to promptly assist with issues such as delays in export-import (EXIM) clearance, supply chain or logistics interruptions, banking or financial issues, and regulatory or compliance issues. In order to find quick solutions, it will also handle complaints about dumping and import spikes and serve as a platform for coordination by bringing together trade-related concerns from several federal and state government agencies.

Tensions over international trade, particularly between the US and China, have increased at the time of this initiative. An ongoing trade war between the two economic giants has been fueled by the U.S.'s recent imposition of a 10% tariff on the majority of its trading partners and an even higher 125% tariff on Chinese goods.

In order to protect the interests of Indian industry and look into opportunities for export expansion, the Commerce Ministry stressed that the helpdesk will act as a proactive mechanism to identify and handle market disruptions early.
