Democrats Rally Around Harris, Eyeing Unity and Victory in Election

A revitalised Democratic Party convened Monday night for President Joe Biden's farewell speech. His decision to end his re-election bid has energised the party, with Vice President Kamala Harris now leading the ticket. The Democratic National Convention in Chicago holds significant importance, occurring just a month after the unexpected switch from Biden to Harris.

Democrats Unite for Harris

Beyond the celebrations, this event is crucial for the party and its new nominee. A misstep could hinder Harris at a time when her campaign is gaining momentum, funds, and enthusiasm. Real questions remain about the depth of her support, the breadth of her coalition, and the strength of her movement.

High Stakes and New Leadership

The opening night was designed as a transition from Biden to his chosen successor, albeit four years earlier than planned. Democrats are using this weeklong event to propel Harris towards a showdown with Republican Donald Trump. Trump's comeback bid is seen by Democrats as a significant threat.

Just a month ago, Democrats were divided over foreign policy, political strategy, and Biden himself. Biden had been holding on despite a disastrous debate performance by claiming he had the best chance of defeating Trump, even more so than Harris.

Supporters and Celebrations

At morning meetings before Monday's prime-time events, delegates wore merchandise celebrating Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. Some sported scarves with Harris's face or graphic tees with her slogans. Walz suggested at a Hispanic Caucus meeting that Harris had reset the race. "People don't just want to vote against something. They want to vote for something," he said. "Kamala Harris has given you something to vote for."

Biden will deliver the main address Monday night, marking his graceful exit from the spotlight 52 years after being elected to the Senate from Delaware. Aides said Biden aims to highlight Harris as a key partner in his accomplishments and make the case for why she must defeat Trump in November.

Protests and Potential Distractions

A potential distraction is thousands of protesters in Chicago opposing the Biden-Harris administration's support for Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza. A group called Abandon Biden held an event to rebrand itself as Abandon Harris, criticising her inability to differentiate herself from Biden's handling of the war.

Harris allies hope these pro-Palestinian protests won't overshadow the official program featuring current and former Democratic stars and "everyday people." Speakers include United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain; Hillary Clinton; Reps. Grace Meng, Jamie Raskin, and Jasmine Crockett; Sens. Chris Coons and Raphael Warnock; and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear.

Biden's Final Turn

Biden faced growing concerns about his mental and physical acuity after struggling during his debate against Trump. By stepping aside and endorsing Harris, he will receive a hero's welcome in his final turn in the spotlight. Biden told reporters during an arena walkthrough that "it's a memorable moment" and that he was ready to pass the baton to Harris.

At a breakfast hosted by the Florida delegation, a volunteer handed out replicas of Biden's famous aviator sunglasses. "Joe Biden made a selfless, heroic decision," Democratic Rep. Kathy Castor of Florida told The Associated Press. "And it'll be awesome to celebrate him tonight," she added.

The Democratic Party would likely have been in worse shape if Biden had clung to the nomination. His endorsement of Harris has provided new energy and focus for the party as they prepare for the upcoming election.

The convention aims to slingshot Harris toward an election faceoff with Trump while uniting a previously divided party under her leadership. The weeklong event is seen as pivotal for setting the tone for Harris's campaign and addressing any lingering doubts about her candidacy.

The event features performances by musicians James Taylor, Jason Isbell, and Mickey Guyton, adding entertainment value to the political proceedings.

The Democratic National Convention marks a significant moment for both Biden's legacy and Harris's future as they aim to present a united front against Trump in November.
