Walz and Clinton Champion 'Fight for Our Freedoms' at Democratic Convention

The Democratic National Convention's third day will feature Tim Walz, the vice-presidential nominee, and former President Bill Clinton. The event aims to build on the momentum Kamala Harris has generated since joining the race a month ago. Walz, known for his Midwestern charm as a teacher and football coach, will introduce himself to the nation. He has faced Republican criticism over his portrayal of his National Guard service and personal story.

Democrats Day 3: Freedom Fight

Focus on Key Issues

Wednesday night's theme is "a fight for our freedoms," with programming expected to highlight abortion access and other rights central to the Democrats' campaign against Donald Trump. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries will speak. They will be joined by "everyday Americans" who argue that their freedoms depend on the election outcome.

Walz will share the stage with Clinton, the 42nd president, who is experienced in delivering political convention speeches. The program also includes governors Wes Moore of Maryland and Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, along with Democratic senators Cory Booker, Chris Murphy, Catherine Cortez Masto, and Amy Klobuchar.

Walz's Background and Challenges

Many Americans were unfamiliar with Walz until Harris selected him as her running mate. In his initial campaign weeks, he has charmed supporters with his background as a teacher and coach, balancing Harris's coastal background. However, Walz has faced scrutiny over embellishing his background. His wife recently clarified that she did not undergo in vitro fertilization as Walz claimed but used other fertility treatments. Republicans have also criticized him for a 2018 comment about carrying weapons in war despite not deploying to a war zone during his 24 years in the National Guard.

Polling data indicates that Walz has had a smoother start as Harris's running mate compared to JD Vance, Trump's vice-presidential pick. About 36% of U.S. adults view Walz favorably, while only 27% have a positive opinion of Vance. More adults have an unfavorable view of Vance than Walz, at 44% to 25%.

Tuesday's Exuberant Session

The week at Chicago's United Center has been a balancing act for Harris and other Democrats. They aim to harness the party's exuberance since President Joe Biden stepped aside while emphasizing that the election will be fiercely contested. Tuesday night's session was energetic, featuring a symbolic roll call vote that turned into a dance party with surprise musical acts like Lil Jon performing "Turn Down for What."

Former President Barack Obama delivered a more serious keynote speech after the roll call, stating, "Make no mistake, it will be a fight." Harris echoed this sentiment in Milwaukee, saying, "And understand, this is not 2016 or 2020. The stakes are higher." Although Harris is in Chicago, she does not plan to attend Walz's speech in person at the United Center.

John Legend is set to perform a tribute to Prince before Walz takes the stage. Walz will discuss his upbringing in Nebraska, his National Guard service, his work as a teacher and coach, and his time in Congress before becoming governor two years ago.

The Democratic National Convention continues to build momentum as it progresses through its scheduled events and speeches.
