Adam Schiff Calls for Biden to Withdraw, Democrats Seek New Nominee

Rep. Adam Schiff has urged President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. Schiff, a prominent Democrat, made this call as the party plans a virtual vote to nominate Biden in early August before the convention starts two weeks later. This comes after nearly 20 Democratic Congress members requested Biden's withdrawal following his debate with former President Donald Trump.

Schiff Urges Biden Withdrawal

The Democratic National Convention (DNC) is set to discuss the virtual vote plans on Friday. The DNC's rules committee will finalise these plans next week, according to a letter from co-chairs Bishop Leah D. Daughtry and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. The letter stated that the virtual roll call vote would not occur before August 1 but would be held before August 7.

Virtual Voting Concerns

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries have suggested delaying the virtual vote by a week. This delay aims to ensure thorough consideration of how the virtual voting process would work, as stated in the letter from Daughtry and Walz. "We will not be implementing a rushed virtual voting process," they wrote.

The AP-NORC Centre for Public Affairs Research poll revealed that nearly two-thirds of Democrats believe Biden should step aside for another candidate. This poll, released Wednesday, undermines Biden's claim that "average Democrats" support him despite some prominent figures turning against him.

Concerns Over Early Roll Call Vote

A group of House Democrats has expressed concerns about an early roll call vote. They circulated a letter raising "serious concerns" about nominating Biden swiftly through a virtual roll call. The letter, which has not been sent yet, warns that it could "deeply undermine the morale and unity of Democrats."

The Democratic convention will open on August 19 in Chicago. However, an early roll call was announced in May to ensure Biden qualifies for Ohio's ballot. Although Ohio changed its rules, the Biden campaign insists on adhering to the initial rules to prevent legal challenges from Republican lawmakers.

Elaine Kamarck, a member of the DNC rulemaking arm, mentioned that even if a virtual roll call occurs before the convention, it wouldn't necessarily secure Biden's nomination. The DNC could still opt for an in-person roll call in Chicago.

Biden's Candidacy Under Scrutiny

The AP-NORC poll also found that only about 3 in 10 Democrats are confident in Biden's mental capability to serve effectively as president. This figure has dropped slightly from 40% in February. Schiff stated, "While the choice to withdraw from the campaign is President Biden’s alone, I believe it is time for him to pass the torch."

Schiff's announcement follows his Senate run this year and his close association with Nancy Pelosi. He believes that stepping aside would allow Democrats to defeat Trump in the upcoming election and secure Biden's legacy of leadership.

A spokesperson mentioned that Rep. Jared Huffman was pleased with the decision to delay the virtual vote and would hold off sending the letter from House Democrats as they continue monitoring the situation.

The DNC's decision on whether to hold a virtual or in-person roll call remains crucial as Ohio law doesn't take effect until September 1. Kamarck emphasised that "the convention is the highest authority" in this process.

The situation continues to evolve as Democrats navigate internal divisions and external challenges ahead of their convention and the upcoming election.
