Delta Flight Makes U-Turn After Engine Panel Falls Off During Takeoff

New York, Mar 27 AP - A Delta Air Lines flight destined for Amsterdam was forced to return to Salt Lake City shortly after takeoff when a panel behind one of its engines detached. The incident, involving an Airbus A330neo jetliner, occurred on Sunday and led to the aircraft landing back in Salt Lake City three hours later, having reached only as far as the Montana-North Dakota boundary. The Federal Aviation Administration's safety database revealed that a pylon panel on the left wing's engine had come off during takeoff. Pylons, which are crucial for attaching engines to wings, include fairing panels that enhance aerodynamics without bearing any load.

Flight Returns After Panel Detaches

Delta Air Lines confirmed on Tuesday that the aircraft returned due to a reported mechanical issue, emphasizing that the flight landed safely without any injuries to the 260 passengers and 13 crew members onboard. The airline also stated that the plane managed to taxi to the gate under its own power. In response to the incident, Delta expressed apologies for the inconvenience caused to its customers and assured efforts were being made to facilitate their onward journeys as swiftly as possible.

This occurrence marks at least the third instance within three months where a panel has detached from a US jetliner. However, it was considerably less severe than an incident on January 5, where an Alaska Airlines jetliner experienced a door plug blowout over Oregon. Additionally, this month witnessed a United Airlines jet, aged 26 years, missing a piece of aluminum skin upon landing in Oregon. Both of these earlier incidents involved Boeing 737 aircraft. In contrast, the Airbus A330neo involved in the latest incident was manufactured in 2020 and has remained grounded since Sunday's event, as per flight-tracking website Flightradar24.
