President Droupadi Murmu Calls for Enhanced Economic Cooperation Between India and Algeria

President Droupadi Murmu has emphasised the importance of enhancing economic collaboration between India and Algeria. She highlighted that Algeria's rapid growth presents numerous opportunities in various sectors. Speaking at the Algerian-Indian Economic Forum, she invited Algerian businesses to participate in India's 'Make in India' and 'Make for the World' initiatives, noting India's significant progress in 'Ease of Doing Business'.

Strengthening Economic Ties: India and Algeria

The President noted that India and Algeria share common values and challenges, which form the basis for strengthening their relations. She encouraged Indian companies to explore opportunities in Algeria's expanding economy. Despite the current trade volume of USD 1.7 billion, Murmu believes there is untapped potential in economic ties between the two nations.

India-Algeria Economic Cooperation

Murmu expressed India's willingness to share its experiences with Algeria to enhance bilateral trade. She also mentioned that Algeria is interested in discussing digital payment systems with India. The President is confident that the youth from both countries will play a crucial role in strengthening people-to-people connections.

During her visit, President Murmu was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Scientific and Technological Hub, Martyr Ihaddaden Abdelhafid University of Algeria. This recognition was for her advocacy of science and knowledge for all social groups in India. She expressed gratitude, stating it was an honour for India more than for herself.

Educational Initiatives and Personal Journey

At the Honorary Doctorate ceremony, Murmu shared her personal journey from a challenging childhood in Odisha to becoming the first woman from her village to graduate from university. Before entering politics, she worked as a clerk and teacher, driven by her passion for education and empowerment.

Murmu highlighted India's focus on technology-led and women-led growth as key drivers of economic recovery. She noted how digital transformation has increased women's workforce participation and benefited rural women through financial inclusion.

India's Educational Reforms

The President discussed India's educational reforms aimed at developing students as enlightened citizens. The National Education Policy 2020 seeks to transform education at all levels and encourages collaboration with foreign institutions. Murmu invited Algerian students to benefit from India's quality education and scholarships.

She also mentioned India's space exploration programme, including the upcoming Gaganyaan mission, which represents India's advancements in space technology.

Cultural Engagements

On her visit's final day, President Murmu explored Algeria's cultural heritage at Tipasa, an ancient Roman city dating back to the 6th century BC. She also visited the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania with Algerian officials Soraya Mouloudji and Aboubakr Boucetta.

Murmu paid tribute to former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on his birth anniversary during her visit. She also addressed the Indian community in Algeria, acknowledging their contributions to the local economy and their role as a bridge for India's interests.

The President's visit marks the first by an Indian Head of State to Algeria, aiming to strengthen India-Africa ties further. Following her stay in Algeria, she plans to visit Mauritania and Malawi as part of her three-nation tour.
