President Droupadi Murmu Advocates for Enhanced Economic Cooperation Between India and Algeria

President Droupadi Murmu has emphasised the need for stronger economic ties between India and Algeria. She highlighted Algeria's rapid economic growth as a significant opportunity for collaboration in various sectors. Addressing the Algerian-Indian Economic Forum, she invited Algerian businesses to participate in India's 'Make in India' and 'Make for the World' initiatives, showcasing India's progress in 'Ease of Doing Business'.

Murmu Calls for Stronger India-Algeria Ties

The President noted that trade between India and Algeria is valued at USD 1.7 billion. However, she believes there is untapped potential in these economic relations. Murmu expressed India's willingness to share its experiences with Algeria to enhance bilateral trade. The forum was organised by the Algerian Economic Renewal Council and FICCI.

India-Algeria Relations and Opportunities

Murmu urged Indian companies to explore opportunities within Algeria's expanding economy. She stated that the relationship between the two nations is built on shared values, common challenges, and mutual trust. The President's Office released a statement highlighting these points.

During her visit, President Murmu received an Honorary Doctorate from the Scientific and Technological Hub, Martyr Ihaddaden Abdelhafid University of Algeria. The doctorate recognised her advocacy for science and knowledge across social groups in India. She expressed gratitude, saying it was an honour for India more than for herself.

Personal Journey and Achievements

In her address at the Honorary Doctorate ceremony, Murmu shared her personal journey from a challenging childhood in Odisha to becoming the first woman from her village to graduate from university. She completed her bachelor's degree at Ramadevi Women's College in Bhubaneshwar.

Before entering politics, Murmu worked as a clerk and teacher. Her passion for education and empowerment has been a driving force throughout her life. She is now the first person from a tribal community and the youngest to hold India's highest office.

Technological Advancements and Education

Murmu highlighted technology-led and women-led growth as key pillars of India's economic recovery. She noted the massive digital transformation in India, which has encouraged women's workforce participation. Technology benefits like financial inclusion have also aided rural women.

She mentioned that India offers quality education at lower costs compared to Western institutions, attracting many African students, including those from Algeria. Scholarships and fellowships are available for African students, and she invited Algerian institutions to engage with India's educational initiatives.

Cultural Engagements and Future Plans

The President also discussed Algeria's interest in dialogue with India on digital payment systems. She referred to India's space exploration programme, including the upcoming Gaganyaan mission set for next year.

During her visit, Murmu paid tribute to former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on his birth anniversary. She also addressed the Indian community in Algeria, praising their contributions to the local economy and their role as a bridge for India's interests.

On her final day in Algeria, Murmu explored the country's cultural heritage at Tipasa's archaeological site and visited the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania. These sites reflect Algeria's rich history dating back to the 6th century BC.

This visit marks President Murmu's first tour as an Indian Head of State aimed at strengthening India-Africa ties. After Algeria, she will continue her journey to Mauritania and Malawi.
