Death Toll in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Climbs to 124 Amid Ongoing Sectarian Clashes Between Shia and Sunni Groups

In Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, sectarian violence has claimed 124 lives, with two more deaths reported on Saturday. The conflict between Shia and Sunni groups persists despite a ceasefire. Over 170 individuals have sustained injuries during the ten-day unrest, according to officials. The clashes continue to escalate, causing significant concern among authorities.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Death Toll Reaches 124

The violence erupted on November 22 following an attack on passenger vans near Parachinar, resulting in 47 fatalities initially. Many of those injured later succumbed to their wounds, raising the death toll to 57. The conflict has primarily involved the Alizai and Bagan tribes, spreading from Bagan Bazaar to areas like Balishkhel and Khar.

Efforts for Peace and Ceasefire

A seven-day ceasefire was established by the government between the Shia and Sunni communities, which was later extended to ten days. Despite these efforts, hostilities have continued unabated. The main Peshawar-Parachinar highway remains closed, and internet and mobile services are suspended in the affected regions.

Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has proposed a visit by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur to the troubled area. This initiative aims to assess the situation firsthand and explore further measures for peace. Additionally, Governor Kundi plans to send a grand peace jirga council from Kohat division to engage with tribal leaders from both factions.

Impact on Local Communities

The ongoing violence has severely impacted local communities, with at least 37 people killed in just two days. The unrest began in Bagan Bazaar and quickly spread to other regions such as Kali, Junj Alizai, and Maqbal. The situation remains tense as efforts continue to restore peace and stability.

The clashes have disrupted daily life significantly, with transportation routes blocked and communication services halted. These disruptions have compounded the challenges faced by residents in accessing essential services and maintaining normalcy amid the conflict.

Authorities remain committed to resolving the crisis through dialogue and negotiation. The involvement of tribal leaders is seen as a crucial step towards achieving lasting peace in the region. As discussions progress, there is hope that a resolution can be reached to end the violence.
