Death Toll in Brazil Bridge Collapse Rises to Eight as Search Continues for Missing Individuals
Brazilian officials announced on Thursday that additional bodies have been discovered following the collapse of a bridge connecting two northern states. This incident, which occurred four days ago, has increased the death toll to eight. The Brazilian navy reported that at least nine individuals remain unaccounted for. On Sunday, vehicles crossing the Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Bridge plummeted into a river when a section of the bridge gave way.

Police working along the border of Maranhao and Tocantins states confirmed that eight vehicles, including four trucks, two cars, and two motorcycles, fell into the river. An investigation is ongoing, as stated by police and Brazil's road department. However, the search efforts in the river have been hindered due to potential risks associated with a sulfuric acid spill from one of the trucks.
Bridge Collapse Investigation
Caco Graca, a supervisor at Maranhao state's environment secretariat, informed journalists on Thursday that the threat of a spill has diminished. The cargo involved includes 76 tons of sulfuric acid and 22,000 liters of agrochemical substances, all found intact. "The worst case scenario would have been a leak of the cargo during the fall. That did not happen, the tanks are intact," Graca told journalists.
The 533-metre (1,748-foot) bridge connects Estreito and Aguiarnopolis cities and was constructed in the 1960s. It is situated approximately 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) north of Brasilia, Brazil's capital. Despite the intact condition of chemical tanks, none have been removed yet from the site.
Environmental Concerns
The risk posed by potential chemical spills has slowed down recovery operations. Authorities are cautious due to the presence of hazardous materials in one of the trucks involved in the accident. Efforts continue to ensure safety while searching for missing persons and recovering vehicles from the river.
The incident highlights infrastructure challenges in Brazil's northern regions. The bridge collapse has prompted discussions about maintenance and safety standards for such critical structures. As investigations proceed, authorities aim to prevent similar tragedies in future by addressing these concerns.
Efforts to locate missing individuals persist amid challenging conditions. The focus remains on ensuring environmental safety while conducting thorough investigations into what caused this tragic event.
