Cyprus and US Sign Defence Agreement to Strengthen Regional Stability
Cyprus and the United States have formalised a defence cooperation framework agreement. This pact aims to enhance their joint response to regional humanitarian crises and security issues, including those linked to climate change.

The agreement was signed by Cyprus Defence Minister Vassilis Palmas and US Assistant Secretary of Defence for International Security Affairs Celeste Wallander. They described it as a significant step in the growing relationship between Cyprus and the US, which saw the lifting of a long-standing US arms embargo on Cyprus in 2022.
Strengthening Bilateral Defence Cooperation
Wallander highlighted Cyprus's strategic importance, stating, "The Republic of Cyprus is a strong partner to the United States, in Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, and plays a pivotal role at the nexus of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East." She praised Cyprus for providing refuge to American civilians evacuated from Sudan and Israel last year.
Additionally, Wallander acknowledged Cyprus's crucial role in establishing a maritime corridor to Gaza. This corridor has facilitated the shipment of over 20 million pounds of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian territory.
Addressing Regional Security Concerns
The joint statement from both countries mentioned that the agreement includes cooperation on countering "malicious actions" and improving the interoperability of Cypriot military forces with US forces. This collaboration aims to ensure smoother operations between the two militaries.
Palmas expressed Cyprus's commitment to strengthening its defence ties with the US. He stated that Cyprus would continue working towards "closer, stronger and beneficial bilateral defence cooperation with the United States."
Wallander also noted, "It is evident that Cyprus is aligned with the West," emphasising the country's alignment with Western policies and values.
This new framework agreement marks another milestone in the evolving Cypriot-US relations. It underscores both nations' dedication to addressing regional security challenges collaboratively.
The agreement's focus on climate change-related security concerns highlights its comprehensive approach to modern defence issues. By addressing these emerging threats together, Cyprus and the US aim to bolster regional stability.
The enhanced cooperation between Cyprus and the US reflects their shared commitment to maintaining peace and security in a strategically important region. This partnership is expected to yield significant benefits for both countries in terms of defence capabilities and humanitarian efforts.
This development signifies a deepening of ties between Cyprus and the US, reinforcing their mutual interests in regional stability and security.
