Thousands Missing As Cyclone Chido Inflicts Catastrophic Damage On Mayotte
Cyclone Chido unleashed its fury on the French territory of Mayotte, causing catastrophic damage and leading to a tragic loss of life. The intense tropical cyclone, striking with winds surpassing 200 km/h (124 mph), laid waste to homes, government facilities, and a hospital. The aftermath of the disaster saw rescue operations in full swing near devastated structures, highlighting the cyclone's brutal impact.
François-Xavier Bieuville, the Prefect of Mayotte, revealed to Mayotte la 1ere, a local TV station, the dire situation on the island. He expressed fears that the death toll could reach into the hundreds, possibly nearing a thousand, due to the cyclone's extreme violence. Although unable to provide exact numbers at this stage, Bieuville detailed the unprecedented scale of the disaster, marking it as the most severe cyclone to strike France in nearly a century. The French Interior Ministry had already reported 11 fatalities and over 250 injuries by Sunday, anticipating a sharp rise in these numbers.

The devastation in Mayotte was unparalleled, with Cyclone Chido wreaking havoc as it barreled through the Indian Ocean. The cyclone, classified as a category 4, the second-highest level of intensity, not only affected Mayotte but also caused significant damage to the neighboring islands of Comoros and Madagascar. However, Mayotte bore the brunt of the storm's fury, being directly in its path. The cyclone's powerful winds, exceeding 220 kph (136 mph), inflicted severe damage on the island's infrastructure, including its airport, and led to widespread power outages.
In response to the catastrophe, France mobilized rescue teams and supplies to aid its overseas department, which is among the poorest in the Indian Ocean. The efforts to provide relief to the affected areas underscored the magnitude of the cyclone's impact and the challenges faced in the recovery process.
Amidst the chaos, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed solidarity with the people of Mayotte, and Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau planned a visit to the island on Monday to assess the situation firsthand. The global community watched as Mayotte struggled to recover from the devastation, with concerns also extending to Mozambique. The African nation braced for Cyclone Chido's landfall, with fears for the safety of more than 2 million residents in its northern region.
This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the destructive power of natural disasters and the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of such events. The loss of life and extensive damage in Mayotte and the surrounding regions highlight the need for continued support and recovery efforts in the aftermath of Cyclone Chido.
