Costa Rica To Temporarily Accept Indians, Immigrants Of Other Countries Deported From US

Following the example set by Panama and Guatemala, Costa Rica announced on Monday that it was also prepared to receive illegal migrants deported from the United States who are nationals of other countries.

The presidential office of the Central American nation stated that 200 migrants from Central Asia and India would arrive on a commercial flight from the US on Wednesday.

Costa Rica's Plan

The initial group of deportees from the United States will land in Costa Rica on Wednesday via a commercial flight, after which they will be transferred to a Temporary Migrant Care Centre near the border with Panama.

The migrants will then be repatriated to their respective countries of origin.

Costa Rica clarified that "the process will be completely financed" by the US government under the supervision of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Following the Example of Panama and Guatemala

Costa Rica has become the third Central American nation to cooperate with the United States in repatriating deported migrants since President Donald Trump took office in Washington on January 20. Panama and Guatemala had previously entered into a similar agreement following a visit by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a recent tour of Latin America.

Panama received its first repatriation flight last week, carrying 119 migrants from China, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and other countries, according to Panamanian officials. As of now, no deportees have yet arrived in Guatemala.

Latin America is home to the majority of the estimated 11 million undocumented migrants in the United States, according to a report by AFP. Many of these migrants have undertaken perilous journeys, facing treacherous terrain, dangerous wildlife, and criminal gangs in search of a better life.

However, Trump has adopted a stringent stance on undocumented migration, referring to some individuals as "monsters" and "animals" during last year's US election campaign.

On his first day in office last month, he declared a national emergency at the southern border and pledged to deport "millions and millions" of migrants.
