Deadly Rebel Attack in Eastern Congo Leaves Dozens Dead, Kidnappings Reported
A rebel attack on a mining site in eastern Congo resulted in the deaths of at least a dozen individuals and the kidnapping of 16 others, underscoring the escalating violence in the region.
At least a dozen people were killed and 16 kidnapped by rebels at a mining site in eastern Congo on Wednesday, according to a local civil society organization. The attack was carried out by rebels from the CODECO armed group near Djugu district in Ituri province, said Vital Tungulo, the head of Mabendi, a local rights group.

Surge in Violence in Eastern Congo
The attack is part of a surge in violence across eastern Congo, where conflict has been ongoing for decades. More than 120 armed groups are fighting in the region, mostly for control of land and mines with valuable minerals. Some groups are also fighting to protect their communities.
CODECO's Involvement
CODECO is a loose association of militia groups mainly from the ethnic Lendu farming community. Since 2017, it has been fighting with Zaire, a self-defense group mainly drawn from the ethnic Hema herding community. According to the African Center for the Study and Research on Terrorism, CODECO attacks have killed nearly 1,800 people and wounded more than 500 in the four years through 2022. The group is known to target areas rich in gold and minerals.
Congo's Mineral Wealth
Congo has some of the world's largest deposits of rare earth minerals, such as cobalt and copper, which are in high demand for the manufacture of electric vehicles, wind turbines, and solar panels.
Military Response
Military commander Yves Kadjena expressed disappointment over the attack, especially considering that CODECO had signed a peace treaty with other militias at the end of January, pledging to stop fighting and release hostages. Kadjena stated that the military was taking action to end the violence.
