In a tragic turn of events, torrential rains have triggered devastating floods in the central region of Congo, resulting in the loss of at least 22 lives, including 10 members of the same family. The relentless rainfall pounded the district of Kananga in Kasai Central province, causing widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure.
Rescue Efforts Intensify Amid Rising Death Toll
As rescue operations continue, the provincial governor, John Kabeya, confirmed the grim news on Tuesday. Initially, the death toll stood at 17, but five more fatalities were confirmed later in the day. The collapse of a wall in Bikuku claimed the lives of 10 individuals, all belonging to the same family, adding to the heart-wrenching toll.
Significant Material Damage Reported
The floods have left a trail of significant material damage in their wake, according to Nathalie Kambala, the country director of The Hand in Hand for Integral Development, a non-governmental organization. The relentless waters have caused extensive damage to homes, buildings, and infrastructure, leaving communities in dire need of assistance.
Flooding a Recurring Challenge in Congo
Regrettably, flooding triggered by heavy rainfall is a recurring challenge in various parts of Congo, particularly in remote areas. In May of this year, a similar tragedy unfolded in the eastern province of South Kivu, where torrential overnight rains led to floods and landslides, claiming the lives of over 400 individuals.
Urgent Action Sought from National Government
Among the structures severely impacted by the recent flooding in Kananga are the Higher Institute of Technology, a church, and a major road that has been rendered impassable. Governor Kabeya emphasized the urgent need for intervention from the national government to address the devastating consequences of the floods and provide support to the affected communities.
Landslide Adds to Congo's Woes
Compounding the nation's challenges, a separate incident occurred in eastern Congo on Sunday, where heavy rains triggered a landslide that claimed the lives of at least four people, with approximately 20 individuals still missing. The relentless natural disasters have brought immense grief and hardship to the people of Congo.
