Condor Flight’s Engine Bursts Into Flames, Makes Emergency Landing in Italy

A Condor flight carrying 273 passengers and 8 crew members was forced into an emergency landing after its right engine caught fire shortly after takeoff from Corfu, Greece. The Boeing 757-300, bound for Düsseldorf, diverted to Brindisi, Italy, where the pilot landed the aircraft safely about an hour later.

Viral Video Captures Sparks Mid-Flight

The terrifying incident was caught on camera by passengers. In one 18-second viral clip, the right side of the fuselage appears to shoot sparks like a giant cigarette lighter, with the fiery streaks lasting nearly 15 seconds before stabilising.

Safe Landing, No Casualties

Though the pilot initially considered returning to Corfu, he continued the journey on a single functioning engine, ultimately landing without injuries. Condor later issued an apology, acknowledging the ordeal. With limited accommodation in Brindisi, most passengers were forced to spend the night at the airport before flying onward to Düsseldorf the next morning.

Aircraft's Legacy

The Boeing 757 involved is one of aviation's longest-serving workhorses, nicknamed the "Atari Ferrari" for its decades-long record in commercial operations. However, its age has often raised questions about continued reliance on older aircraft in modern fleets.

Aviation Safety in Spotlight

This near-miss follows another aviation tragedy earlier this year: on June 12, an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad to London, killing over 290 people including passengers and people on the ground.

Both incidents underscore the growing scrutiny over airline safety standards and the operational lifespan of commercial aircraft.
