Columbia University Extends Negotiations with Gaza War Protesters, Avoids Confrontation

Columbia University managed to avoid another clash between students and police on Wednesday, as campus officials announced they would continue talks with pro-Palestinian protesters for an additional 48 hours. University President Minouche Shafik had initially set a midnight deadline for an agreement to clear the encampment of protesters on campus. However, the school extended negotiations, citing "important progress." The New York Ivy League university stated that student protesters had agreed to dismantle and remove a significant number of tents.Similar standoffs persisted at other universities across the United States, including California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, where protesters used furniture, tents, chains, and zip ties to block a building's entrance and barricade themselves inside. New student encampments also emerged at institutions like Brown University in Rhode Island. Students protesting Israel's war with Hamas are demanding that schools sever financial ties to Israel and divest from companies involved in the ongoing conflict. Some Jewish students have expressed concerns that the protests have veered into antisemitism and made them feel unsafe on campus. Columbia University has agreed with protest representatives that only students will remain at the encampment and that discriminatory or harassing language will be banned.Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the pro-Palestinian demonstrations on US college campuses in a video statement released Wednesday. He called the response of several university presidents "shameful" and urged state, local, and federal officials to intervene. The surge in demonstrations has left universities grappling with balancing campus safety and free speech rights. While many institutions initially tolerated the protests, they have recently begun implementing more stringent disciplinary measures due to safety concerns.
