Colombia Warns of Ending Diplomatic Ties with Israel Over Gaza Cease-fire
In a significant development that could reshape diplomatic relations, Colombian President Gustavo Petro has issued a stern warning to Israel, threatening to sever diplomatic ties unless the country adheres to a United Nations Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. This announcement was made public through a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

The Colombian leader's ultimatum follows his endorsement of the resolution's approval, where he also called upon other nations to reconsider their ties with Israel if it continues its military operations in Gaza. These operations have reportedly resulted in over 32,000 casualties, as per the Gaza Health Ministry's records.
Responding to President Petro's statements, Israel's Foreign Ministry defended its stance through a tweet, asserting its commitment to safeguarding its citizens against any form of pressure or threats. The ministry criticized Petro, labeling him a supporter of what it termed as "Hamas terrorists," responsible for attacks on Israeli communities on October 7 that precipitated the current conflict in Gaza. According to Israel, Petro's position is detrimental to the Colombian populace.
This exchange on X underscores a rapid decline in the relationship between Colombia and Israel, transitioning from allies in military and trade endeavors to ideological adversaries. Historically, Colombia has relied on Israeli technology and arms, including warplanes and machine guns, to combat drug cartels and insurgent groups. The two nations had even entered into a free trade agreement back in 2020.
However, ties began to sour following Petro's election in 2022. A staunch advocate for Palestine, Petro has condemned Israel's actions in Gaza as "genocide." His administration took a decisive step by halting military purchases from Israel after an incident where Israeli forces fired upon Palestinians congregating around aid trucks, resulting in over 100 fatalities.
Further straining relations, Israel suspended defense cooperation with Colombia in October after Petro refrained from denouncing a Hamas attack on Israeli villages and controversially compared Israeli military actions to those of Nazi forces.
Military experts in Colombia have expressed concerns that this diplomatic rift could compromise the nation's defense capabilities. Colombia's defense infrastructure heavily relies on Israeli technology, particularly for the maintenance of its Kfir jet fleet—crucial for launching precision-guided munitions. Additionally, Colombia has engaged in multiple contracts with Israeli firms for military communications equipment and manufactures assault rifles under an Israeli license.
This unfolding situation highlights the complexities of international relations and the potential implications for national security when ideological differences lead to diplomatic standoffs.
