Colombia to Sever Diplomatic Relations with Israel, Cites Gaza Actions

In a significant shift in international relations, Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced on Wednesday that Colombia will sever diplomatic ties with Israel starting Thursday. This decision marks a dramatic escalation in the tensions between the two nations, stemming from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. President Petro has been vocal in his criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza, going as far as labeling them as "genocide." This bold stance comes after Colombia had already halted weapon purchases from Israel and drew parallels between Israeli military operations in Gaza and the atrocities committed by Nazi Germany.

Colombia Ends Ties with Israel

During an International Workers Day march in Bogotá, Petro expressed his firm position, stating, "Tomorrow, diplomatic relations with the State of Israel will be broken … for having a genocidal president." He further emphasized the global implications of the conflict, asserting, "If Palestine dies, humanity dies, and we are not going to let it die." This statement underscores the depth of Colombia's commitment to what it perceives as a moral stance on the issue.

Israel's Foreign Minister Israel Katz responded swiftly to Petro's declarations, condemning them through a statement on the social media platform X. Katz criticized Petro for aligning with what he described as "the most despicable monsters known to mankind," referencing horrific acts such as burning babies and raping women. He defended Israel's position, stating that historical ties between Colombia and Israel were based on mutual respect and cooperation, which he believes will not be tarnished by what he referred to as an "antisemitic and hate-filled president."

The deterioration of relations between Colombia and Israel is notable given their historically strong partnership. Colombia has relied on Israeli military technology, including warplanes and machine guns, to combat drug cartels and rebel groups within its borders. The two countries also signed a free trade agreement in 2020, highlighting their economic ties. Furthermore, Colombia deepened its military relationship with Israel in the late 1980s through the purchase of Kfir fighter jets, which played a significant role in weakening guerrilla forces and facilitating peace negotiations.

President Petro's decision comes at a time when he is actively promoting domestic reforms in healthcare, pensions, and labor laws. His participation in the Workers Day march in Bogotá was part of these efforts. The move to cut diplomatic relations with Israel reflects not only a foreign policy shift but also an alignment with Petro's broader reformist agenda since taking office as Colombia's first leftist president in 2022.

As this situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this diplomatic break will affect both nations' standing on the global stage and their respective internal political dynamics. What is clear is that this decision marks a significant departure from Colombia's previous foreign policy direction.
