Chinese Woman Wins ₹1 Lakh For Not Using Mobile Phone For 8-Hours
In a unique challenge set in southwest China, a young woman triumphed by abstaining from mobile phone use for eight hours, earning herself a reward of 10,000 yuan (approximately 1,400 US dollars). This victory converted to more than one lakh Indian rupees, showcasing an intriguing feat of digital detox in today’s smartphone-centric world.
The competition, hosted at a shopping center in Chongqing Municipality on November 29, attracted attention from numerous participants keen to test their willpower against the lure of their digital devices.

The event saw a selection of 10 final contestants from an initial pool of 100 hopefuls, all aiming to prove they could endure eight hours without engaging with their mobile phones. The rules were stringent; competitors were required to relinquish their smartphones to the organizers at the outset.
They were then positioned on beds within the venue, with the stipulation that they avoid any use of digital gadgets including iPads and laptops. For those needing to contact their families in case of emergencies, only old-fashioned mobile phones capable of voice calls were permitted, emphasizing the challenge's commitment to minimizing digital distraction.
Participants faced strict regulations to maintain the competition’s integrity. They were not allowed to leave their designated mats unnecessarily, with only a brief five-minute reprieve granted for bathroom breaks. Eating and drinking had to occur while seated on the mat, adding a layer of physical constraint to the digital one. Although some sleeping was allowed, falling into a deep slumber was discouraged to keep the challenge's focus on conscious endurance rather than passing the time unconsciously.
The determination of the winner involved monitoring the contestants’ sleep patterns and periods of inactivity through smartwatches, highlighting a blend of technology and its abstention. The event culminated in the victory of a woman named Dong, who achieved an impressive score of 88.99 out of 100. Dong's ability to remain alert and minimally lethargic, despite spending the bulk of the challenge in bed, was particularly noted by the organizers in their announcement of the winner.
This competition in Chongqing Municipality not only awarded Dong a significant monetary prize but also underscored a growing awareness and challenge around the pervasive influence of mobile phones and digital devices on daily life. Participants mainly passed the time by sleeping or reading books, suggesting a return to more traditional forms of entertainment and relaxation in the absence of digital options. Dong's victory serves as a testament to the possibility of disengaging from our digital tethers, even if just for a day.
