Chinese Teen’s Viral Survival Story: Lost 10 Days In Freezing Mountains—Here’s How He Made It Out
An 18-year-old man has been rescued after surviving for 10 days in the freezing mountains of northwestern China. Struggling with food shortages, he managed to stay alive by drinking river water, melting snow, and even using toothpaste for sustenance, according to Network 18 report.
Sun Liang set out on a solo hiking trip on February 8, venturing into the dangerous Qinling Mountains in Shaanxi province. The mountain range, known for its unpredictable weather and rough terrain, has an average height of 2,500 metres and is home to a variety of wildlife.
Just two days into his journey, Sun lost contact with his family when his electronic devices ran out of battery. He attempted to find his way by following a creek downstream but suffered multiple falls, fracturing his right arm. Seeking shelter, he huddled behind a large rock, using dry straw and leaves to make a temporary bed as he endured the harsh cold and strong winds.
Concerned for his safety, Sun's family alerted local rescue teams, leading to an extensive search operation. On February 17, rescuers finally found him. While trying to start a fire, he noticed the scent of smoke in the distance. He immediately called out for help, and his cries were heard by the search team, resulting in his dramatic rescue.
Sun was hiking along the Ao-Tai Line, a dangerous 170-km-long trail that connects Ao Mountain and Taibai Mountain. It is one of the five most challenging hiking trails in China and has claimed the lives of more than 50 hikers in the past 20 years. Due to its risks, local authorities banned hiking on this route in 2018.
Despite several warnings, some adventurers continue to take the risk. According to reports, Sun is believed to be the first person to be rescued after getting lost in this perilous region.
Sun, who had developed a passion for hiking over the past year, had previously climbed three well-known snow-covered mountains in China. Unaware of the Ao-Tai Line's ban, he chose the trail simply to "meet the challenge."
Following his rescue, Sun shared his experience on social media, warning others against attempting the hike.
"I feel terrified after the incident. This area is not suitable for hiking at all. The wind was so strong that I could barely stand, even with two trekking poles for support. The snow was so heavy that I could hardly open my eyes," he said.
"In short, navigating this trail is extremely difficult. There are no beautiful views, and the weather changes suddenly. I urge all mountain climbers considering the Ao-Tai Line: you must not go, as life is invaluable," he added.
The rescue mission involved over 30 team members and cost Sun's family 80,000 yuan (over Rs 9.6 lakh). A rescue team member stated that the fee is intended to "deter potential hikers" from taking the restricted route.
