Shanghai, Oct 18: An unemployed couple allegedly sold off their baby daughter and used the money to buy expensive mobile phone and training shoes. The duo is set to face a trial in Shanghai for the sinister act.

The couple, Teng and Zhang, started online advertising to sell off their baby in June this year. The advertisement said they would sell off their unborn child for upto 50,000 yuan.

The baby was then born at home so that the news did not get spread and then they handed her over the baby in lieu of deposition of cash in their bank account on the same day. It was also alleged that the couple tried to cover up Zhang's pregnancy and told the neighbours that she had grown a tumour in her abdomen.

The duo later justified their act by saying that they wanted their daughter to grow in a financially stable family where she would also get proper education. Prosecutors, however, suspected that the duo had a more sinister design. They checked their bank accounts to see that after selling off their daughter, they went on to buy an iPhone and a pair of high-end shoes.

Last year, seven persons were jailed in China's Hunan province for purchasing a kidney froma teenage boy who used the money to buy a iPhone and an iPad.
