Chinese citizens shocked over stampede incident, believed stampedes happened only in India
Shanghai, Jan 2: New Year's eve turned out to be tragic for many in Shanghai as a stampede there resulted in the death of 36 revellers.
The government however questioned 'why were such less police officials on duty for thousands of people who had gathered at Shanghai's famous waterfront, known as the Bund.
The site of the stampede was cordoned off on Friday, with grieving relatives holding a candlelight memorial. Most victims were students in their 20s.
City officials said one Taiwanese was among the dead. Of the 47 injured, 13 were in critical condition, they said. However by Friday citizens reacted to the incident and said that they thought such incidents took place only in India or in pilgrimages.
One person was quoted by news agencies saying that 'overnight China had become like India and Shanghai like Mumbai.'
