China Surpasses Renewable Energy Goals with Record Wind and Solar Installations in 2024

China made significant strides in renewable energy last year, installing a record amount of wind and solar power. The country added 357 gigawatts of these energy sources, marking a 45% increase in solar and an 18% rise in wind power compared to the end of 2023, as reported by China's National Energy Administration. This achievement is comparable to constructing 357 full-size nuclear plants within a single year.

Chinas Record Renewable Energy Installations in 2024

China's rapid expansion in renewables has allowed it to surpass its target of 1,200 gigawatts from renewable sources by 2030, achieving this goal six years ahead of schedule. This target was set by President Xi Jinping five years ago. Despite this progress, China remains the largest contributor to climate change due to its heavy reliance on coal for electricity, cement production, and manufacturing.

Renewable Energy Expansion

Daniel Jasper, a senior policy advisor at Project Drawdown, highlighted China's recognition of the importance of rapidly building renewables for energy and climate security. He stated, "While China's overall emissions are the largest of any single country, they have recognised – at least, in part – that rapidly building renewables is essential for energy and climate security. Given the recent administration change in Washington, China is now well poised to lead the world in the energy transition."

According to Carbon Brief, China's carbon dioxide emissions have been on the rise but showed a slight decline when comparing the last ten months of 2024 with the same period the previous year. However, it remains uncertain if this indicates a significant turning point for global climate efforts.

Global Renewable Energy Efforts

The United States also experienced a surge in clean energy installations in 2024 but fell short of China's figures. Preliminary data from the American Clean Power Association indicates that the US installed 268 gigawatts of solar and wind power during this period.

China not only excels in building and utilising clean energy but also plays a crucial role as a global exporter of renewable energy equipment. The International Energy Agency identifies China as the leading supplier of batteries, solar panels, wind turbines, and electrolyzers used for hydrogen fuel production.

Challenges and Innovations

The extensive scale of Chinese manufacturing has contributed to reducing the costs of solar and wind energy, making them more affordable than fossil fuels in many cases. Recently, DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence company, raised hopes by suggesting potential innovations that could further reduce electricity consumption in this sector.

Meanwhile, the US clean energy industry faces challenges due to executive orders from President Donald Trump. These orders paused leasing and permitting for wind energy projects while promoting oil and gas drilling and mining activities in Alaska. Additionally, a national energy emergency was declared.

China's advancements in renewable energy highlight its potential leadership role in global energy transition efforts. As China continues to expand its renewable capacity and export capabilities, it may influence other nations to accelerate their own clean energy initiatives.
