China Interfered In Canadian Elections Won By Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party: Intelligence

Canada's internal intelligence on Tuesday claimed China's interference in the Country's 2019 and 2021 elections. According to the news agency Reuters, a special investigation team of Canadian intelligence, which was commissioned on orders of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after opposition legislators raised concerns about foreign involvement, learned that China interfered in Canada's election process.

Canada currently has The Liberal Party's government, headed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

During a session at the Canadian parliament, a report quoting findings of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) was presented that hinted at alleged foreign involvement.

"We know that the People's Republic of China (PRC) clandestinely and deceptively interfered in both the 2019 and 2021 elections," Reuters published a quote from CSIS findings.

The investigative agency described Chinese involvement as strategic and aimed to back candidates who were perceived as pro-China or neutral on issues relating to the foreign country.

Earlier, when Global News had underlined China's alleged involvement in Canadian elections, China had rubbished such claims and stated that it has nothing to do with Canadian politics.

In 2021, Conservative Party leader Erin O'Toole alleged that Chinese interference in Canada's elections may cost his party up to nine seats.

"State actors are able to conduct foreign interference successfully in Canada because there are few legal or political consequences. FI is therefore low-risk and high-reward," said the CSIS assessment.

Notably, Justin Trudeau is slated to testify before the commission on Wednesday.
